It is clear that throughout the play, Macbeth becomes more and more accustom to killing to reach his goal, but his mind also begins to fail at the same rate.

The witches greet Macbeth with “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter! After Macbeth receives the witches’ prophecy he begins to dwell on the idea of becoming the king of Scotland even after Banquo’s advice to avoid the evil temptations.

This is the first instance in which the reader sees a glimmer of dishonor in Macbeth, although he questions whether or not the title will simply fall to him or if he will have to perform a dark deed to acquire the throne.

This hallucination is an obvious result of the guilt Macbeth is feeling for betraying his king.

The mirage is also the first sign of Macbeth’s decent into madness, which will eventually consume by the play’s end.

Upon doing so, Macbeth initially decides that he will not kill the king, as it goes against all he believes in.

Although Macbeth is instantly berated by his wife and eventually follows through with the murder, he does display a desire to remain an honorable man and resist temptation.Shakespeare uses this descent into madness as another way for the audience to feel sympathy for Macbeth.The way in which Shakespeare wanted the audience to view Macbeth by the end of the play relies heavily on opinion.Macbeth seems to realize the possible consequences of his actions in the line, “Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return to plague the inventor”(21).On his way to assassinate Duncan, Macbeth sees the image of a floating dagger leading him to the king’s bedchamber.Upon reading a letter from her husband describing the witches’ prophecy, Lady Macbeth questions his nature, saying that “It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness”(16).Lady Macbeth decides that she must convince her husband to do whatever is required to become king.However, as one takes a closer look into the story it becomes clear that Macbeth should be pitied as a man who lost himself and fell too far into the darkness.The driving force behind Macbeth’s descent into madness is spurred on by the continued influencing by outside forces.Throughout the rest of the play Lady Macbeth will be one of the strongest influences on Macbeth to seize the crown.A cry to the devil is made by Lady Macbeth to rid her of femininity and replace it with cruelty, which she begins to use against Macbeth.
